Challenge yourself with paddleboarding

There are several locations to check out paddleboarding, including the Monday night races hosted by Salmon Bay Paddle in Ballard.

Summer is here, so get out and soak it up while it’s here. One method to consider: SUPing.

That’s stand-up paddleboarding, an activity enjoyed in Hawaii for many years and that has been growing — from surf to rivers and lakes — around here.

Fans say it combines special views with good core and balance work.

Each Monday, Salmon Bay Paddle in Ballard hosts races. They begin at 7 p.m. (come early to warm up and register). Race entry is $5. For details, including where and where not to park, go to

“Our races have a mixture of newish paddlers, those wanting to just complete it, and a few sponsored professional paddlers,” said Rob Casey of Salmon Bay Paddle. “Overall laid-back atmosphere.”
