Organized walks promote community and health
The nonprofit Feet First holds “Jane’s Walks” Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, in honor of urban planning activist Jane Jacobs, and the American Lung Association holds its Fight for Air walk Sunday, May 5.

Want to learn the neighborhood? Leave your car behind. The folks at Seattle’s nonprofit Feet First urge people to join at least one of their multiple “Jane’s Walks” Saturday and Sunday.
Communities across the world will be taking neighborhood treks this weekend to explore collective history, architecture and personalities. The walks are in recognition of urban planning activist Jane Jacobs and her belief that communities can be strengthened through walking conversations.
“Jane Jacobs believed that ‘cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody,’ and Jane’s Walks provide an opportunity for everyone to participate in the discussion,” said Feet First Executive Director Lisa Quinn.

Here’s another cause to walk for: the annual Fight for Air Walk, which raises money for the American Lung Association. Sunday’s South Lake Union event includes a “Canines for Clean Air Pet Parade,” free outdoor yoga sessions and a fun “Breathe Boot Camp.”
