Here’s an idea — courtesy of the Washington Trails Association (wta.org) — for engaging your kids on walks and hikes: play Winter Bird Bingo!

Start by downloading a game card that shows various species from the WTA website. Then head out and see what you can spot.

WTA suggests a few spots you might want to try:

Big Ditch Slough, Skagit Wildlife Area just south of Mount Vernon: Walk along the dike. You can also hop in the car and pair this hike with the flat 2-mile loop at the Skagit Wildlife Area just out of Conway.

Padilla Bay, Mount Vernon: It’s flat and traverses sloughs, tidal flats and salt marshes.

Dungeness Spit trail, Sequim: The trail gains some elevation and traverses through woods. Costs $3 a family.

Don’t forget local parks, which often host easy-to-spot birds like black-capped chickadees. Blue herons sometimes appear at the Ballard Locks.
