Amateur Carl Jonson of Wing Point Golf and Country Club on Bainbridge Island won the Northwest Open Invitational at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla on Wednesday.

Jonson finished at 9-under-par 207, one stroke ahead of Tim Feenstra of Broadmoor Golf Club.

Feenstra took home the first place professional check of $6,250. Two back was second-round leader Colin Inglis.

Jonson’s victory was the first by an amateur since Derek Berg took the title at the Running Y Ranch in 2006.

Note

• Defending champion Tejay van Garderen, a Tacoma native, took over the yellow jersey at the USA Pro Challenge with a thrilling win in Stage 3, holding off Rafal Majka at the finish.

Van Garderen, of BMC Racing, finished the 96-mile trek from Gunnison to Monarch Mountain, Colo., in 3 hours, 50 minutes, 41 seconds. That was just ahead of Majka, who rides for Tinkoff-Saxo.

The 26-year-old Van Garderen leads Majka by 20 seconds heading into Stage 4.
