Brittany Lincicome leads LPGA Championship by 3 strokes

Brittany Lincicome has a three-shot lead over Lexi Thompson and defending champion Inbee Park in the LPGA Championship in Pittsford, N.Y.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – It had been so long that Brittany Lincicome didn’t quite know what to think about her spot atop the LPGA Championship leaderboard.

Lincicome opened a three-stroke lead Friday in the wind-swept tournament, the LPGA Tour’s fourth major championship of the season, as Americans moved into position for their fourth straight major victory of the year.

“I feel like I’ve been doing a lot of really good things,” Lincicome said. “I feel like I’ve been playing really well, driving it far, which is awesome. But it’s just not coming together.”

It has at Monroe Golf Club. Lincicome followed her opening 67 with a 68 to reach 9 under as she chases her first title since 2011. She won the 2009 Kraft Nabisco for her lone major title and has five LPGA Tour victories.

Lexi Thompson, tied for the first-round lead with Meena Lee, dropped into a tie for second place with defending champion Inbee Park of South Korea. Thompson had a 72, and Park shot a 66.

Thompson won the Kraft Nabisco to start the major run for U.S. players this year.

Jimin Kang (72), a graduate of King’s High School in Shoreline, was tied for 54th place at 2 over.

Players with scores worse than 146 missed the cut, including former Washington Huskies players Anya Alvarez (75-72—147) and Louise Friberg (75-75—150).

Slocum, Langley share lead

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Heath Slocum and Scott Langley each shot 5-under 65 for the second straight day to share the lead in the Wyndham Championship, the PGA Tour’s final regular-season event before the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Nick Watney (64), Andrew Svoboda (64), Brian Stuard (65) and Martin Laird (66) were one back.

Michael Putnam (67), who is from University Place, was tied for 28th at 5 under.

Players with scores of 139 and worse missed the cut, a group that included Richard H. Lee (71-68—139) and Alex Prugh (73-70—143), who are former Washington Huskies; Seattle native Fred Couples (74-69—143); and Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley (71-73—144).

Other tournaments

John Cook birdied the final two holes for a 7-under 65 and a share of the first-round lead with Olin Browne in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open, an event on the 50-and-older Champions Tour in Endicott, N.Y.

• In U.S. Amateur semifinal matches Saturday in Johns Creek, Ga., Frederick Wedel of The Woodlands, Texas, will face Gunn Yang of South Korea and DennyMcCarthy of Rockville, Md., will meet Corey Conners of Canada.
