Seattle native Fred Couples wants dearly to win the Boeing Classic, the Champions Tour event at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge, and should be ready for another chance Aug. 22-24 after missing a little more than two months in late spring and early summer with a back injury.

Couples, who turns 55 in October, was at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge on Monday, teaming with Steve Ballmer in a match against Rick Neuheisel and Mitch Levy in the Snoqualmie Showdown for charity.

Couples and Ballmer won the alternate-shot match, 6 and 5.

After injuring his back in mid-May in the Regions Tradition, a Champions Tour major, Couples didn’t return to action until the Senior British Open a couple of weeks ago, finishing tied for 13th. In five events before his latest injury, he had been in the top five each time, with one win and two seconds.

“If you’ve seen the commercials, you know my goal this year was to win the Schwab Cup (the seasonlong points race on the Champions Tour), but my body just couldn’t handle, it,” he said.

The Boeing Classic will be celebrating its 10th anniversary. New this year will be a beer garden overlooking the 13th green and the 14th tee box.
