MONTREAL – Michael Putnam, who is from University Place, and Tim Petrovic shared the first-round lead in the Canadian Open on Thursday, shooting a 6-under 64 at rain-softened Royal Montreal.

Kyle Stanley of Gig Harbor and Canadian amateur Taylor Pendrith were a stroke back in the PGA Tour event.

Putnam, who didn’t have a bogey, hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation.

“It was tough ball-striking, but somehow I was able to keep it in the fairway and take advantage of the soft greens to hit a couple of shots close,” he said.

Alex Prugh, a former Washington Huskies player from Spokane, was tied for 16th at 67. Kevin Chappell (72), who owns a home in Kirkland, was tied for 106th place, and ex-UW Husky Richard H. Lee (74) was tied for 138th.
