SAMMAMISH — Kevin Penner leads defending champion Chris Williams by one stroke heading into the final round of play Friday at the Sahalee Players Championship at Sahalee Country Club.

Penner, who grew up near at Eastlake High and will be a senior at UNLV, shot a 6-under 66 in the second round and a 3-under 69 in the third round on Thursday for a 10-under 206.

Williams, who will be entering his senior season at Washington, finished at 9-under 207 after shooting even-par 72 in the second round and 5-under 67 in the third round. Williams is trying to become the first two-time champion of the 19-year-old event.

First-round leader Tain Lee is tied with Dimitrios Papadatos for third at 7-under 209.

Beau Hossler, the 17-year-old star from Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) High who led in the second round of the U.S. Open last month, was alone in fifth at 4-under 212.

Penner, who tied for fourth last year, shot 32 on the back nine in the second round, including four birdies.

Friday's final round begins at 8 a.m. Penner, Williams and Lee will be in the final group, teeing off at 11:20.
