BETHESDA, Md. — Tiger Woods played before the largest "crowd" of the day, though it never surpassed 100. Brendon de Jonge had as many birdies — three — as people in his gallery on a strange, virtually silent Saturday at the AT&T National.

A windstorm overnight that toppled dozens of trees and littered the course with limbs forced tournament officials to keep spectators and all but the essential volunteers away from Congressional for the third round of the PGA Tour event.

South African de Jonge was steady in the steamy heat and shot a 2-under-par 69 that gave him a 7-under 206 total and a one-stroke lead over Woods (67), Bo Van Pelt (67) and S.Y. Noh (69) entering Sunday's final round.

A few volunteers, tournament staff and club members tagged along after Woods and provided about the only noise of the round.

Woods chipped in for a birdie on No. 6 and offered a moderate fist pump as the gallery — it numbered 73 at that point, not counting TV crews and other media — cheered.

"I don't really get that fired up on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday," Woods said. "I think for me, I just understand I still have so far to go."

Kyle Stanley (68) of Gig Harbor was tied for 31st place at 2 over, and Ryan Moore (73) of Puyallup was tied for 66th at 8 over.

Ailing Couples

loses his lead

PITTSBURGH — Competing in the final group for the third round of the Champions Tour's third major tournament, relative unknown Joe Daley outplayed an ailing Fred Couples of Seattle and held off Tom Lehman.

Another one of the biggest names on the 50-and-older tour ended the day with a long putt to ensure Daley wouldn't have sole possession of the lead as he searches for his first Champions Tour victory.

Mark Calcavecchia holed a 50-foot birdie putt on No. 18 for a 6-under 64, moving him into a tie with Daley (68) atop the leaderboard at 12-under 198 heading into Sunday's final round of the Senior Players Championship.

Second-round leader Couples (70) and Lehman (66) were one stroke back.

Defending champion Couples struggled with back problems, saying he felt "horrible" and was "tired of feeling like this." He first had spasms while hitting from the rough on the second hole.

"I just was really sore and couldn't get loose, but at the same time I'm one behind, so I'm in great shape," Couples said.

Kirk Triplett (65), a graduate of Pullman High School, was tied for 12th place at 5 under.

Other tournament

• Rookie Veronica Felibert of Venezuela shot a 5-under 66 for a four-stroke lead in the second round of the LPGA's NW Arkansas Championship in Rogers.

Felibert, ranked 723rd in the world, was at 11 under. Mika Miyazato (65) and Inbee Park (68) were tied for second.

Jimin Kang (69), a graduate of King's High School in Shoreline, was tied for 27th place at 2 under. Ex-Washington Huskies player Paige Mackenzie (71) of Yakima was tied for 60th at 1 over.
