Defending champion Steve Stricker leads John Deere Classic | Golf

SILVIS, Ill. — Defending champion Steve Stricker set a 36-hole record at the John Deere Classic with a two-round total of 126, which is 16 under at TPC Deere Run.

Stricker shot a 5-under-par 66 Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Paul Goydos (68). David Frost set the previous 36-hole record of 127 in 2000.

On Thursday, Goydos became the fourth player in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59.

"Yesterday was one of the greatest putting rounds maybe of all time and today was not," Goydos said.

Stricker, who shot a 60 in the first round, said, "It's always tough to follow up a good round with another good round and for whatever reason, I thought I did a pretty good job of that today,"

Players with scores of 139 or worse missed the cut, a group that included Jeff Gove (72-74 — 146) of Seattle and Pullman High graduate Kirk Triplett (76-75 — 151).

Other tournaments

• Rain that began with 100 of the 156 players still to begin or finish the second round caused play to be suspended at the U.S. Women's Open in Oakmont, Pa.

Play is scheduled to resume at 4:30 a.m. PDT Saturday, with the third round set to begin with threesomes teeing off at 11:30 a.m. PDT.

Sophie Gustafson was the leader on the course at even par when play was halted; she had completed one hole of the second round. Cristie Kerr (even-par 71) and first-round leader Brittany Lang (74) were the clubhouse leaders at 1-over 143 for 36 holes.

• Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland shot a 4-under 67, opening a four-stroke lead over Italian Edoardo Molinari (69) at the Scottish Open in Luss. Players missing the cut by one stroke included American Phil Mickelson (71-74 — 145) and South African Ernie Els (69-76 — 145).

• Kevin Chappell (63) led second-place Keegan Bradley (61) by three strokes after two rounds of the Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic in Clarksburg, Ontario. Chappell was at 19-under 124 on two courses; it is the lowest opening 36-hole score in the Nationwide Tour's 21-year history.

Players missing the cut because they had scores of 138 or higher included Michael Putnam (67-72 — 139) of University Place; Kyle Stanley (70-69 — 139) of Gig Harbor; former Washington Huskies Brock Mackenzie (68-72 — 140) of Yakima and Troy Kelly (72-68 — 140); and Kentwood High School graduate Jess Daley (73-71 — 144).
