New DVDs

Tuesday, Aug. 19, brings releases about vampire “Lovers,” “Spider-Man” and a “Fading Gigolo.” Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services. For full reviews, search the title at seattletimes.com. Release dates are subject to change.

★★★  “Only Lovers Left Alive” (R): Jim Jarmusch’s moody vampire love story stars Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as glamorous, immortal partners.

★★★  “Fading Gigolo” (R): A down-on-his-luck bookstore owner (Woody Allen) discovers that his florist pal (writer-director John Turturro) has a talent for pleasing wealthy, unhappily married women.

★★½  “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (PG-13): Andrew Garfield returns as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy — and they “are a treat together,” says Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald. Otherwise — besides Jamie Foxx as a new villain — “it all feels pretty much like what we’ve seen before: dark corporate doings, a city endangered, cars flying through the air to be effortlessly caught by Spidey.”

“The Quiet Ones” (PG-13): A psychology professor (Jared Harris) and team of students conduct an experiment on a mentally unstable young woman (Olivia Cooke) who appears to be possessed by a diabolical alter ego. No star rating provided.
