Releases for Tuesday, Aug. 12, go from “Filth” to the “Muppets.” Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services. For full reviews, search the title at seattletimes.com. Release dates are subject to change.
★★★½ “Locke” (R): Steven Knight’s tight little drama takes place almost entirely in the front seat of a BMW, during real time, as a man (Tom Hardy) drives from Birmingham to London on the M1 late at night. “We see no other characters; only hear them, through Ian’s phone headset,” says Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald. “And, for the most part, it works like gangbusters.”
★★★ “Muppets Most Wanted” (PG): Will the real Kermie stand up? The latest installment of the musical-comedy franchise follows the world’s No. 1 criminal, Constantine, who happens to look exactly like Kermit the Frog.
★★★ “Hateship Loveship” (R): This Kristen Wiig drama follows a caregiver as she begins a new life watching over a troubled teenager (Hailee Steinfeld).
★★★ “Railway Man” (R): Based on the memoir of a World War II prisoner of war, the movie showcases Colin Firth as the agonized protagonist who spent years in a Japanese prison camp. Nicole Kidman co-stars.
★★ “Breathe In” (R): An unhappy high-school piano teacher (Guy Pearce) becomes drawn to a British exchange student (Felicity Jones) living with his family for a semester. Trouble, of the unconsummated variety, ensues.
★½ “Filth” (R): James McAvoy gets down and dirty as an Edinburgh cop caught up in depravity and manipulation.
★½ “A Haunted House 2” (R): Writer/star Marlon Wayans is back to spoof more fright films.
