★★½ “Divergent” (PG-13): This grim, dystopian teen adventure — based on Veronica Roth’s blockbuster novel — has a bright spot: actress Shailene Woodley, starring as a16-year-old separated from her family by a merciless “faction” system. She becomes a cog in a teen-warrior factory and, as she learns to defend herself and others, finds romance with a trainer (Theo James).
★★ “Oculus” (R): A sinister mirror plays a key role as two stories merge together: the present, in which a brother and sister (Brenton Thwaites, Karen Gillan) revisit their childhood home a decade after the violent death of their parents; and 10 years earlier in the same place, on the night of the crime.
★★ “Ping Pong Summer” (not rated): A geeky adolescent (Marcello Conte) at a Maryland beach resort in 1985 runs afoul of several bullies (Joseph McCaughtry, Andy Riddle) and later receives instruction in bully abatement and pingpong mastery from an oddball recluse (Susan Sarandon). ★★
