The Blues are back and Seafair’s got them at one of Seattle’s biggest summer celebrations, the Seafair Weekend Hydroplane Races and Air Show.
The Patriots Jet Team, vintage aircraft and other airborne attractions fill the air show daily, but the precision maneuvers of the Navy Blue Angels, back after a year’s absence, are the crowd-pleasing stars.
Colorful hydroplane racing fills the weekend along with an array of onshore activities for all ages. Genesee Park is the main venue, with military exhibits, including free flight simulators, a food court, beer garden, entertainment stage, Kids Zone inflatable rides, Hydro 101 tent to learn hydroplane racing, and a new water slide.
The North Beach Food and Wine Festival has a cooking stage, food trucks and vendors, wine tasting and a beer garden. The Sound Beach Party includes the Wakeboard Experience and beer garden, and tours for a close look at the hydros at Stan Sayres Pits.
Saturday night celebrates the 65th anniversary of Seafair Weekend with evening air-show attractions, a concert and fireworks show at Genesee Park, included with Saturday admission, or evening events only, 5 to 11 p.m., for $10.
Parking is limited in the area. Reservations for parking in Seafair lots are available on their website for $30 a day, along with complete information on other transportation options, including a coupon for $10 all-day Sea-Tac Airport parking to take Sound Transit Link light rail, or take rail or Metro transit from anywhere to the Columbia City Station for free shuttle-bus service to Seafair events. Link Light Rail day passes are $1.50 to $5.50 a day, free for ages 6 and younger. For information, see soundtransit.org/Schedules/Central-Link-light-rail.
Pack sunscreen and, though many spectators stand or sit on the grass, you might want to bring lawn chairs or a blanket. Bringing your own food and beverages is fine, but no alcohol or pets are allowed, and if you’re planning to tour the pits, close-toed shoes are required. Bicycle parking is available at the main gate, with no bicycles permitted in the park. No firearms are allowed, either.
Championship racing day Sunday is broadcast on KIRO-TV, culminating in the Seafair Cup H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Final at 4:45 p.m. to wrap up the weekend festivities.
