Tuesday, July 15, brings a sci-fi story that should get “Under the Skin.” Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services. For full reviews, search the title at seattletimes.com. Release dates are subject to change.
★★★½ “Under the Skin” (R): “You won’t easily shake off ‘Under the Skin,’ a strange, night-blooming science-fiction tale about a beautiful woman who isn’t a woman at all,” writes Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald. “Played with quiet intensity by Scarlett Johansson, she’s an alien, sent down to the Glasgow, Scotland, area to cruise for men, lure them into her van and kill them for food ... That’s the basic outline of the film, but it doesn’t convey its long stretches of silence (interrupted, at times, by Bernard Herrmann-like shrieks of strings); its cold, wet landscapes and sharp winds; its sense, at times, of utter darkness.”
★★ “The Face of Love” (PG-13): Annette Bening portrays a Los Angeles widow of five years who’s shocked one day to meet an artist who looks exactly like her late, beloved husband (Ed Harris, in both roles).
★★ “Rio 2” (G): Jewel (voiced by Anne Hathaway), Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) and their three kids head into the Amazon for a new adventure featuring more stars (Kristin Chenoweth, Rita Moreno, Bruno Mars) and more tunes.
“A Night in Old Mexico” (not rated): An ornery rancher (Robert Duvall) takes off for good times across the border, his grandson (Jeremy Irvine) reluctantly riding shotgun. No star rating provided.
