Seattle Pride celebrates 40th anniversary this weekend

Seattle Pride celebrates its 40th anniversary this weekend. The theme is Generations of Pride, honoring the history of the Northwest’s LGBT rights movement and the progress the LGBT community has made since the first Seattle Pride celebration in 1974.
Sunday’s Pride Parade features Celebrity Grand Marshal George Takei, “Hikaru Sulu” in the Star Trek TV show and movies and now a social-justice activist for LGBT and human rights around the world. Community grand marshals include King County Executive Dow Constantine. Local activists including organizers from the 1974 event will be special guests.
The parade — along Fourth Avenue — will be the largest in Seattle Pride history, with thousand of participants in 200 groups and parade announcers on three stages at Westlake Park, the Fourth and Bell Street beer garden and at Fourth Avenue and Denny Way. The parade preshow, at10 a.m. at Westlake Park will feature performances by Captain Smarty Pants and Seattle Ladies Choir and remarks from Takei.
After the parade, Seattle PrideFest will have entertainment on three stages from noon to 8 p.m. at Seattle Center, with a ticketed closing concert event at 7:30 p.m. at Mural Amphiteater.
Saturday PrideFest events include entertainment and games from 1 to 5 p.m. and a street festival with food trucks, beer garden, DJs and bands from 4 p.m. until dark at Cal Anderson Park.
Also on Saturday, the Capitol Hill Pride Festival celebrating diversity and community pride and history welcomes everyone, LGBT and straight, for local music, food, entertainment, booths by restaurants, nonprofits, businesses and artists on Broadway. Pony rides for kids for kids from 1 to 4 p.m. are a new feature this year.
The popular annual Doggie Drag Costume Contest and Parade is at 11:30 a.m. near the Main Stage at Broadway and Harrison, with a suggested $5 donation per dog to benefit the Seattle Humane Society
