AT THE MOVIES

“Oscar-Nominated Short Films”: The 10 nominees in the best short categories (animation and live action, in separate programs) are presented in this annual pre-Oscar showcase. Both programs open Friday, Jan. 31, at the Harvard Exit.

“Labor Day”: A new drama from writer/director Jason Reitman (“Young Adult,” “Up in the Air”) about a single mother and a convict, played by Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin. It opens Friday, Jan. 31, at several theaters.

“That Awkward Moment”: Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller star in this modern romantic comedy. It has late-night previews Thursday, Jan. 30, and opens at several theaters on Friday, Jan. 31.

“At Middleton”: A college-set romance that features Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga, and was filmed at Spokane’s Gonzaga University and Pullman’s Washington State University. It opens Friday, Jan. 31, at the Sundance Cinemas.
