Oscar nominees ‘Captain Phillips,’ ‘Blue Jasmine’
New DVD releases for Tuesday, Jan. 21, include the Oscar-nominated films “Captain Phillips” and “Blue Jasmine.”
Need to catch up on your movie viewing before the Academy Awards March 2? A few nominees — “Captain Phillips” and “Blue Jasmine” — make their timely debut Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Besides “Captain Phillips” and “Dallas Buyers Club,” which comes out Feb. 4, most of the best-picture contenders are still playing in theaters.
Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services. For full reviews, search the movie title at seattletimes.com. Release dates are subject to change.
“Captain Phillips” (PG-13): Watch Tom Hanks, says Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald, “for perhaps the finest moments of acting in his distinguished career.” In 2009, four Somali pirates hijacked a container ship near the Horn of Africa. Hanks plays the captain, and director Paul Greengrass recreates those terrible days in his now-trademark fashion: “utterly real, almost unbearably tense (even if you know how things ultimately turned out).”
Hanks didn’t receive an Oscar nomination, but the film did get six: for best picture, supporting actor (Barkhad Abdi), adapted screenplay, sound mixing, sound editing and film editing.
“Blue Jasmine” (PG-13): In this Woody Allen drama, Cate Blanchett — nominated for best actress — portrays a former New York socialite whose life has fallen apart. Sally Hawkins, as the sister who helps her, got a nod for best supporting actress and Allen for original screenplay.
“In a World ...” (R): A vocal coach (Lake Bell) tries to make it in the male-dominated world of voice-over artists.
“Charlie Countryman” (R): An American (Shia LaBeouf) in Bucharest meets the girl of his dreams (Evan Rachel Wood) — and some very shady men (Mads Mikkelsen, Til Schweiger).
“Machete Kills” (R): Danny Trejo returns in the sequel to 2010’s “Machete” and, once again, there will be blood.
