Honor and remember deceased loved ones in the ancient traditions of Mexico at the “Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) — A Mexican Celebration to Remember Our Departed” this weekend at Seattle Center. Performances, activities, food and rituals of the holiday celebrate the art and spirituality of Mexican culture and its indigenous roots, honoring history, culture and family through remembrance of deceased loved ones and ancestors said to be nearest to the living at this time of year.

Displays include community altars and information on the influence of immigrant cultures in the Pacific Northwest. Art workshops and children’s activities invite all ages to decorate sugar skulls, make paper flowers and other Dia de Muertos traditions. All are invited to join a musical procession honoring the lives of loved ones who’ve died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Welcoming ceremonies at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday kick off continuous entertainment including Aztec dance, mariachi bands and other Latin American performances. After the festival Saturday there’s an all-ages Baile de Calaveras dance from 7 to 10 p.m. with Latino Heritage Award presentation.

Dia de Muertos, part of Seattle Center’s Festàl world festivals throughout the year, is produced in partnership with the Dia de Muertos Committee and Latino City Employees.
