“Iron Man 3” (PG-13): This action film, starring Robert Downey Jr., seems designed less as an art object or visual entertainment than a full-body assault on the senses. A frantic, occasionally funny, finally enervating barrage of special effects, explosive set pieces, sardonic one-liners and notional human emotions, this branch of the Marvel franchise tree feels overextended enough to snap off entirely.
Which isn’t to say that this installment doesn’t have its moments. Taking the reins from series director Jon Favreau, Shane Black has enlisted a fine ensemble to bring a beloved chapter of Tony Stark’s saga to life, including a crafty Ben Kingsley as villain-du-jour the Mandarin.
“Iron Man 3” ends with a tone of finality that feels like a well-earned respite.
Extras: Commentary with Black and screenwriter Drew Pearce, gag reel, deleted and extended scenes, and other featurettes.
“The Kings of Summer” (R): Three teens (played by Seattle actor Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso and Moises Arias) run away into the Ohio woods, where they try to live off the land.
“Room 237” (not rated): Five obsessive viewers of Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film “The Shining” share their divergent observations.
“Fill the Void” (PG): In the ultraorthodox Haredi community of Tel Aviv, an 18-year-old (Hadas Yaron) struggles with the notion of marrying her late sister’s husband. In Hebrew, with English subtitles.
“Unfinished Song” (PG-13): A drama about a marriage in its twilight, starring Terence Stamp, Vanessa Redgrave and Gemma Arterton.
“Scenic Route” (R): Longtime pals (Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler) get lost in the desert.
