‘Trance,’ ‘Ginger & Rosa,’ ‘Kiss of the Damned,’ ‘Starbuck’

“Trance” (R): Hypnotherapy becomes the key to unlocking the secret of where a stolen Goya masterpiece is hidden in director Danny Boyle’s psychological thriller starring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson. “It’s all one big guessing game,” writes movie reviewer Soren Andersen, “and that’s what makes the picture so enjoyable. The fun comes in the form of the surprises ‘Trance’ springs on you every step of the way.”
“Ginger & Rosa” (PG-13): Sally Potter’s coming-of-age tale, set in 1962, follows two best friends (Elle Fanning and Alice Englert) growing up in East London under the threat of nuclear war.
“Kiss of the Damned” (R): When a young American screenwriter (Milo Ventimiglia) discovers the bloodsucking secret of a mysterious woman (French actress Joséphine de La Baume), he wants to go all the way into her world.
“Pieta” (not rated, for mature audiences; subtitled): Not for the squeamish, this South Korean drama concerns a loan shark’s brutal enforcer (Lee Jung-jin), who encounters a woman claiming to be his long-lost mother.
“New World” (not rated, for mature audiences; subtitled): Another South Korean drama, this one focuses on an undercover cop (Lee Jung-jae) at the heart of a powerful mob organization.
“Starbuck” (R): A slacker (Patrick Huard) discovers he’s fathered hundreds of kids via scores of visits to a sperm bank — and now 142 of them want to meet him. The comedy is in French, with English subtitles.
