New DVDs

Tuesday’s releases drift through time, with “Cloud Atlas,” “Back to 1942,” “Texas Chainsaw” and more. Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services. For full reviews, search the movie title at seattletimes.com. Release dates are subject to change.

2.5 stars“Cloud Atlas” (R): Based on David Mitchell’s 2004 novel, “Cloud Atlas” tells six nesting stories, with six different narrative voices and set in six different locations and time periods (two of them far in the future). The movie — with its message of “from womb to tomb, we are bound to others, past or present” — also uses the same troupe of actors in each story, some so heavily made up they’re unrecognizable (spot Hugh Grant, in old-age makeup, and Hugo Weaving as a female Nurse Ratched type.)

3 stars“Beware of Mr. Baker” (R): Jay Bulger’s documentary profiles Cream drummer Ginger Baker, one of rock’s legendary wild men.

“Texas Chainsaw” (R): The opening sequence takes place right after the final scene of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic. No star rating provided.

“Back to 1942” (not rated; for mature audiences): Representing Hollywood in director Feng Xiaogang’s historical drama about famine in China’s Henan province during the war against Japan is Adrien Brody, as a Time magazine reporter, and Tim Robbins, as a crusading priest. No star rating provided.

“Frankie Go Boom” (not rated; for mature audiences): A comedy about the dysfunctional relationship between a man (Charlie Hunnam) and his incorrigible brother (Chris O’Dowd). No star rating provided.
