A prime Seattle locus for high-octane international and local avant-garde performance, On the Boards is planning a 2013-14 season with a spread of acts from five continents and four world premiere works by Northwest artists.
The Inter/National series of mainstage events includes performances by Lola Arias, a Chilean multimedia ensemble located in Buenos Aires; Vuyani Dance Theatre, of Johannesburg (presented in partnership with Seattle Theatre Group), led by choreographer Gregory Maqoma; and a piece by Jérôme Bel, of Paris, about Cédric Andrieux’s life as a prominent ballet and modern dancer.
Also on the series: Grouped’ArtGravelArtGroup of Montreal, a dance ensemble led by choreographer Frédérick Gravel; Niwagekidan Penino, a Tokyo company led by psychiatrist-playwright Kuro Tanino performing “a psychoanalytical erotic fantasy” which OtB artistic director Lane Czaplinski describes as “potentially the strangest show I’ve ever seen” (and that’s saying a lot).
Another Parisian artist, choreographer-director Alain Buffard, will bring his “choreographic opera” titled “Baron Samedi” (with an international cast and music by Kurt Weill).
The Northwest Series aims to showcase new works by such well-known Seattle experimenters as choreographers Dayna Hanson and zoe | juniper, as well as a new piece by former Seattle theater artists Paul Willis and Kristen Kosmas, and a four-part dance suite by Pullman-bred choreographer Heather Kravas.
In addition, the series will feature “Wayfinders,” a theatrically staged song cycle created and performed by Portland’s Holcombe Waller; and “Winners & Losers,” a topical theater collaboration from Vancouver, B.C.’s Theatre Replacement and Neworld Theatre.
On the Boards will also host as a special event a choreographic meditation on the mind/spirit connection by New York’s Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People, rescheduled from an earlier slot due to a medical emergency for one of the performers.
The venue will continue to offer many adjunct events along with its regular performing lineup, including preshow dinners, special forums and the 12 Minutes Max series of works-in-progress.
