NEW DELHI —

Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma's crime thriller based on the 2008 terror attack on Mumbai has opened in theaters worldwide.

"The Attacks of 26/11" captures three hours in the lives of two men involved in the deadly attacks in which 10 gunmen laid siege to India's financial hub, leaving 166 people dead.

Varma's offering is a dramatic reconstruction of the attack viewed through the perspective of Mumbai's police chief and the lone gunman who survived the attack.

The film stars veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar as the police commissioner. Sanjeev Jaiswal reprises the role of Ajmal Kasab, the terrorist caught after he gunned down people at a crowded railway station.

The film will be shown at the Berlin International Film Festival 2013 in the panorama and competition sections.
