This week’s jazz offerings in Seattle

Jazz fans who aren’t heading for the Portland Jazz Festival this week should consider checking out pianist Steve Kuhn at Cornish College Thursday or drummer Jack DeJohnette’s stellar quartet Tuesday and Wednesday at Jazz Alley.

Seattle jazz fans migrate south this time of year for the Portland Jazz Festival, and with good reason, given its strong lineup and celebratory community feeling (see accompanying story by Andrew Gilbert on Page 10).

For those who can’t make the trek, there are two excellent jazz outings closer to home. Pianist Steve Kuhn, whose work with vocalist Sheila Jordan, Stan Getz and Art Farmer is justifiably admired, is one of the flat-out masters of the piano trio — harmonically radiant, rhythmically flowing and with a bell-like touch — right up there with Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau. Part of the Earshot spring series that began last Sunday, Kuhn performs with bassist Buster Williams and drummer Joey Baron at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Poncho Concert Hall, Cornish College, 710 E. Roy St., Seattle; $10-$20 (800-838-3006 or www.brownpapertickets.com).

Over at Jazz Alley, another jazz veteran holds forth: Jack DeJohnette (pictured), along with Tony Williams a foundational pillar of modern jazz drumming and cymballing, appears in a pedigreed quartet that includes the increasingly focused tenor saxophone of John Coltrane’s son, Ravi; bassist Matt Garrison, who happens to be the son of ex-Coltrane bassist Jimmy Garrison; and the dazzling pianist George Colligan. DeJohnette’s band appears at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave., Seattle; $28.50 (206-441-9729 or www.jazzalley.com).
