Tuesday brings a few releases that could jolt you upright. Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services. For full reviews, search the movie title at seattletimes.com. Release dates are subject to change.
“Frankenweenie” (PG): Director Tim Burton stitches together a black-and-white animated tale about a 10-year-old boy named Victor (last name Frankenstein, of course) who brings his beloved dog Sparky back to life. (Can be scary for younger children.)
“Compliance” (R): Movie reviewer Soren Andersen calls Craig Zobel’s drama claustrophobic and vastly unsettling. “Ordinary people in ordinary settings are psychologically manipulated by a sick prankster to engage in behaviors so egregious that his victims can scarcely believe they’re doing them. Yet they do them anyway ... A greater horror comes when one realizes that, placed in the same kind of situation, one might react in the same way.”
“House at the End of the Street” (PG-13): Jennifer Lawrence adds a horror thriller to her impressive résumé.
“Samsara” (PG-13): Ron Fricke and Mark Magidson’s documentary consists of a non-narrative stream of images shot in 25 countries.
“Dredd” (R): Karl Urban replaces Sylvester Stallone as the futuristic comic-book judge-jury-executioner.
“Hit & Run” (R): Dax Shepard plays a reformed bank robber in a witness-protection program who winds up running from the crooked compatriots he ratted out. Kristen Bell co-stars as his girlfriend.
“Jack & Diane” (R): A young-lesbians-in-love romance starring Juno Temple and Riley Keough.
