New DVDs

3 stars “ParaNorman” (PG): A centuries-old curse, with zombies emerging from their graves, plagues a working-class town, and an 11-year-old with an uncanny ability to talk to ghosts is the only one who can save the day. The stop-motion animated comedy features the voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Leslie Mann.

2 stars“Lawless” (R): Director John Hillcoat’s Depression-era gangster saga focuses on a bootlegging hothead (Shia LaBeouf) and a borderline-psychotic lawman (Guy Pearce).

2.5 stars“Step Up Revolution” (PG-13): The kids gotta dance. This installment of the series, with Kathryn McCormick and Ryan Guzman, taps into the “flash-mob” phenomenon and moves the action to Miami.

1 stars“The Apparition” (PG-13): A supernatural presence is unleashed in Todd Lincoln’s haunted-house flick, with Ashley Greene, Sebastian Stan and Tom Felton.

Friday releases

2 stars “Men in Black 3” (PG-13): Will Smith returns as Agent J, who gets zapped back to 1969 to help the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) stop a very, very bad alien (Jemaine Clement).

2.5 stars“Sparkle” (PG-13): Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston, in her final screen role, star in this remake of the 1976 film about a young girl determined to follow her dream of becoming a singer/songwriter.
