Stage director John Langs has been appointed to the new full-time post of associate artistic director at ACT Theatre. Langs will join the staff in January 2013.

No stranger to the Seattle theater scene, the Los Angeles-based Langs has worked often here and gained a reputation for his insightful, dynamic direction of plays largely from the classical canon. For Seattle Shakespeare Company, he staged memorable versions of "Hamlet," "King Lear" and "The Merchant of Venice." His productions of Elmer Rice's "The Adding Machine" for New Century Theatre and Harold Pinter's "The Dumb Waiter" for ACT's Pinter Festival won praise as well.

Langs, 40, has directed at theaters around the U.S. and Off Broadway, and received a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for his mounting of "The Brothers Karamazov." He will move to Seattle with his wife, actress Klea Scott, and their son.

At ACT, Langs is set to direct this year's staging of "A Christmas Carol," and Will Eno's "Middletown" in 2013. His Seattle Shakespeare Company airing of "Antony and Cleopatra" opens this week, at Intiman Playhouse. In addition to directing, at ACT he will also develop new plays and assist with the company's Heating Lab series.
