Weekend Preview: Whidbey Island Fair, geocaching

A lineup of entertainment options for the weekend of Aug. 17-19, 2012, including the Whidbey Island Fair and Geocaching Block Party. Films opening Friday include "Old Goats," "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" and "Killer Joe."

Geocaching Block Party: Geocachers explore the neighborhood searching for geocaches using a GPS device or smartphone, beginner, intermediate and advanced geocaching courses available, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Solstice Plaza, North 34th Street and Fremont Avenue North, Seattle; free (www.groundspeak.com).

At the movies

"The Odd Life of Timothy Green": Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton discover they have a magical child. It opened Wednesday at several theaters.

"Old Goats": The debut feature from local filmmaker Taylor Guterson, about three retirees, was shot on Bainbridge Island. It opens Friday at the SIFF Cinemas at the Uptown.

"ParaNorman": From the makers of "Coraline," a new animated film about a young boy who can speak with the dead. It opens Friday at several theaters (at many in 3D).

"Killer Joe": William Friedkin's dark comedy features Emile Hirsch, Matthew McConaughey and Thomas Haden Church. It opens Friday at the Harvard Exit and Lincoln Square Cinemas.

"Sparkle": A remake of the 1976 film about three sisters in the 1960s who form a girl group features "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks and the final screen performance of Whitney Houston. It has midnight previews Thursday and opens Friday at the several theaters.

"The Expendables 2": Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris return in this sequel. It also has midnight previews Thursday and opens Friday at several theaters.

"360": An ensemble drama with Rachel Weisz, Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law and Ben Foster. It opens Friday at the Sundance Cinemas.

"Sleepless Night": A French thriller about a cop involved with gangsters and drug dealers. It opens Friday at the Grand Illusion.

"Americano": A drama about a man recovering from his mother's death. It opens Friday at the Varsity.
