The Short List

Critics' Picks: Lucien Postlewaite, Ballard Pizza Company, 'A Tribute to Joni Mitchell'

Three things Seattle Times writers love this week: A chance to see PNB's Lucien Postlewaite one last time, Ethan Stowell's pizza joint in Ballard, "A Tribute to Joni Mitchell."

Dance

Lucien Postlewaite

Cue sobs of dismay here: One of Pacific Northwest Ballet's treasures, principal dancer Lucien Postlewaite (who can forget his passionate, heartbreaking Roméo in "Roméo et Juliette"?), has announced that he's ending his nine-year PNB run at the end of this season to join Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. Postlewaite's final PNB performance will be June 10, but you can see him next weekend dancing the title role in "Apollo" Thursday and Saturday evenings and the "Cour d'Amour" pas de deux in "Carmina Burana" Friday evening and Sunday afternoon — beautifully, no doubt. Food

Ballard Pizza Company

The chance of me hanging out in Ballard after 2 a.m. just improved by a factor of 10. This week, acclaimed chef Ethan Stowell debuts his casual joint, Ballard Pizza Company, selling $2.50 slices until 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. No exact opening date, but the chef guarantees the pizza joint, at 5107 Ballard Ave. N.W., will be open after midnight for all the bar hoppers by Friday. More info at www.ballardpizzacompany.com.

Music

'A Tribute to Joni Mitchell'

Not sure how this 2007 gem passed me by the first time, but when a friend put it on and I heard Brazilian Meistersinger Caetano Veloso doing Joni's "Dreamland," I was dumbfounded. When I got the CD, I found there was so much more! Bless producer Bob Hurwitz for bringing Prince in for "A Case of You," Björk on "Boho Dance," Emmylou Harris for "Magdalena Laundries" and k.d. lang on one of my favorite Joni songs of all time, "Help Me," from "Court and Spark." Brilliance on brilliance.
