A poetic farewell to the year in movies

This year has gone from bad to worse — so let's talk movies now, in verse. Seattle Times movie critic Moira Macdonald pens her annual, rhyming farewell to the cinema year.

Seattle Times movie critic

Dear readers, look: the clocks don't lie

The closing of '08 draws nigh.

So now my task's to show no fear

And rhyme right through the movie year!

To start off, well, it's only right

To swirl my cape toward "The Dark Knight."

This batwing'd hit earned praise from all

(We'll miss you, Maggie Gyllenhaal!)

R. Downey starred in "Iron Man"

And "Tropic Thunder" — with a tan.

"Hellboy" came back; "The Mummy," too;

"Speed Racer" seemed to lack a clue.

Also back, to cheers and moans,

Was Han Solo as Indy Jones.

James Bond returned, a beat-up mensch.

His better half? Dame Judi Dench!

Chick flicks, well-coiffed, were in the news:

Could I borrow C. Bradshaw's shoes?

In "Mamma Mia!," song came knocking.

(Note to Brosnan: Stick to talking.)

"HSM" was filled with dance

And trav'ling girls again shared "Pants."

"Twilight" teens with praise were singing —

My ears, alas, continue ringing.

"Zack & Miri" went to bed

Brit-lit fans enjoyed "Brideshead."

Though in "Get Smart" Anne H. seemed harried

She bloomed in "Rachel Getting Married."

Sean Penn drew raves in Van Sant's "Milk,"

In "Duchess" Keira pranced in silk.

Winslet shone in "Road" and "Reader,"

For "Marley" Jen A. found a breeder.

In spring's "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"

Male nudity was far from partial.

"Australia" tickets didn't sell

And "Love Guru" . . . hmm, what's that smell?

"Wall*E" was winning; "Bolt" charmed too;

In June a panda learned "Kung Fu."

"Four Christmases" made critics pout,

Streep and Hoffman sparred in "Doubt."

A year of film, both swell and frightful —

But popcorn always tastes delightful.

So look ahead, at '09's boast:

It's Wolverine as Oscar host!

Also on tap, in distant view:

The "Half-Blood Prince" — and "Star Trek," too.

So as '08 rides toward the sun,

Happy New Year, everyone!
