AUGUST is melting away toward another school year, but time remains to help equip needy students for class.

Generous contributions to the school-supplies drive of The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy are putting smiles on young faces. The donations also relieve grateful parents of another back-to-school expense.

Helping students arrive for class with the same supplies as everyone else is a powerful gift.

Contributions are divided among three excellent agencies: Hopelink, the YWCA of Seattle-King County-Snohomish County and the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness.

They reach needy students and families in homeless shelters, immigrant communities, Eastside suburbs, and neighborhoods around Snohomish and King counties.

These fine organizations buy supplies in bulk, screen applicants and distribute grade-appropriate backpacks full of supplies.

This editorial-page campaign officially ends on Labor Day. But the need continues after classes resume. The agencies keep supplies in reserve to meet requests from schools.

Please help. Providing students with the tools of learning celebrates the nation’s founding spirit and the pursuit of happiness.

Readers are invited to send a donation to The School Supply Drive of The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy, P.O. Box C-11025, Seattle, WA 98111, For donations via debit or credit card please go online at seati.ms/edschoolsupplies or email pdelaney@seattletimes.com for details.
