GENEROUS readers power the school-supplies drive of The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy. For many, their enthusiasm comes from memories of the first day of school.

They are pleased to support this editorial-page campaign because they too easily recall showing up empty-handed to start a new school year.

Parents who are now buying school supplies and backpacks for grandchildren are eager to help others.

Retired teachers know firsthand the volume of students who will need to be equipped with school supplies.

Notes often accompany donations that single out and praise teachers known for spending their own money to help students.

The Times is the recipient of thanks as well, but readers and their donations make this drive work. The need is great, and that is well understood.

Contributions are divided among three excellent agencies: Hopelink, the YWCA of Seattle-King County-Snohomish County and the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness. Their work is gratefully acknowledged by readers.

The agencies buy, organize and distribute grade-appropriate supplies. They screen applicants. They also work to maximize the reach and value of reader donations.

Our school-supplies drive runs through Labor Day, so there is plenty of time to participate. Help provide the tools of learning.

Readers are invited to send a donation to The School Supply Drive of The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy, P.O. Box C-11025, Seattle, WA 98111. For donations via debit or credit card please go online at seati.ms/edschoolsupplies or email pdelaney@seattletimes.com for details.
