The Times recommends Sylvester Cann in the 46th Legislative District
The Seattle Times endorses Democrat Sylvester Cann for state representative in the 46th Legislative District.
Seattle Times Editorial
IN the high-profile fight between two Democrats, the voters of Seattle’s 46th Legislative District should support Sylvester Cann over appointed incumbent state Rep. Gerry Pollet in Position 1.
Both are liberals, although Cann tends to be more moderate. Significantly, leading Democrats are endorsing Cann. Among them are state Sen. Ed Murray, Reps. Reuven Carlyle and Eric Pettigrew, King County Executive Dow Constantine and his predecessor, Ron Sims.
Pollet and Cann are similar on a range of issues. Both want the state to have more revenue.
But there are differences, particularly on education. Both are opposed to Initiative 1240, for charter public schools, but Cann likes the idea of charter public schools. Pollet opposed steps toward a unified system of public-school employee health benefits, while Cann calls it “a good idea.”
Pollet voted against pension reform, which cut the subsidy to early retirement for new state employees; Cann says he would have voted for it. “This is where you have to be independent of your party,” he says.
Independent, rational and patient: Sylvester Cann.
