Incumbent state Rep. Mike Hope, R-Lake Stevens, deserves re-election to House Position 2 from the 44th District.

Hope, a Seattle police officer, ran unsuccessfully against Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon in 2011. We did not endorse Hope in that race, but this last legislative session he demonstrated a capacity to work in a bipartisan manner, and that willingness must be encouraged and supported.

He promoted and helped pass legislation known as the Blue Alert, to warn the public of criminal suspects on the loose who are a particular danger to the public and law enforcement. The law is modeled on the Amber Alert, which seeks the public’s help in looking for missing children.

Hope faces a challenge from a political newcomer, Democrat Mary McNaughton of Snohomish. She is a nurse and has been active in school programs with her family. She serves as a union representative for her nursing colleagues.

McNaughton advocates for more female representation among lawmakers in Olympia, and more health-care expertise among legislators.

Hope’s demonstrated willingness to work across party lines is a plus in this race.

In House Position 1, challenger Mark Harmsworth was previously endorsed over Democratic incumbent Hans Dunshee.

Harmsworth, in his second term on the Mill Creek City Council, offers the promise of a strong advocate for public education and fiscal reforms in Olympia.
