State Rep. Eileen Cody is a veteran lawmaker who has served all of Washington from the 34th District, which includes West Seattle, Vashon and Burien.

The Democrat, a staff nurse at Group Health Cooperative, has been a key player in local plans to connect residents with the federal Affordable Care Act.

Her work on a health-insurance exchange began in 2008. She has also worked to promote other reforms. Cody sponsored and helped secure passage of legislation to identify misused and overused health practices, and develop and encourage best practices.

Cody has also been a thoughtful vote for reforms across state government and in state budgeting.

Her opponent, William Giammarese, also a Democrat, acknowledges he got into the race out of a belief that political races should not go uncontested. The Vashon resident has lived in the district two years.

As the state explores new access to health care for residents, Cody’s experience and expertise are all the more important.

State Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon, the incumbent Democrat in Pos. 2, is uncontested for another term.
