The school-supplies drive of The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy is not over, but please allow us to say, "Thank you very much." We share the gratitude of those being helped.
Our generous readers cannot be thanked too often.
Summer break has some time to run, but it has hardly been a vacation for families worried about the basics: food, shelter and employment. The expenses of a new school year only add to the anxiety.
Contributions to the Times editorial page's annual school-supplies campaign buy the pens, notebooks, crayons, glue sticks and such we call the tools of learning. It's amazing how humble items blossom in hands guided by eager minds.
Backpacks stuffed with school supplies equip students to learn and provide a measure of relief that will be remembered for a lifetime: the feel of fitting in, and not drawing attention on the first day of class.
Thank you, readers. You make it happen.
The Times' school-supply drive divides donations among three excellent agencies: Hopelink, the YWCA of Seattle-King County-Snohomish County and the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness. They screen applicants, buy and organize the grade-appropriate supplies and distribute them.
Backpacks full of school supplies provided by a generous, supportive community send a strong, pragmatic message about the importance of education.
