U.S. Rep. Adam Smith is running for his ninth term in the 9th Congressional District, though the campaign terrain is different because it has been dramatically redrawn.

Regardless, Smith, a moderate, hardworking Democrat, is the standout candidate in a field of five that includes three candidates who don't even live in the district. None of the challengers has mounted much of a campaign.

Smith, the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, has developed significant expertise on defense matters and established a record of working on behalf of members of the military, though his district no longer includes Joint Base Lewis-McChord. He has been a strong voice for bringing troops home and reducing spending.

The lack of strong challengers for Smith is surprising, considering the purpose of the change to the district, which now stretches from his Tacoma neighborhood north to Seattle's Rainier Beach and Mercer Island. The Washington Redistricting Commission drew the 9th District to be the state's first with a majority of residents who are racial or ethnic minorities.

No matter the change, Smith will ably serve all his constituents, both the old and the new.
