Two of my favorite indulgences — good beer and good movies — could finally be united like long-lost lovers.

On Thursday, the House Government Accountability and Oversight committee is scheduled to hear a proposal to ease up on alcohol sale restrictions at cinemas. Currently, cinemas can get permits to sell drinks, but if the movie house lets in minors, the drinking must be done in well-lighted places, i.e. the lobby, which totally defeats the purpose of having a tasty Snow Cap as the film rolls.

HB 1001 thins the Liquor Control Board rules by allowing cinemas to simply describe how they would limit alcohol sales to minors. An argument can be made that teens could get an adult to slip them a beer in the dark, but in my experience, a kid bent on drinking in the dark will do so in or out of a theater.

Let adults be adults, and hopefully at next Seattle International Film Fest, I'll give a toast to Washington's craft brewers while watching another great work by Seattle's Lynn Shelton.
