Another major newspaper -- The Dallas Morning News -- comes out for same-sex marriage

In its Sunday edition, the Dallas Morning News editorial page called for the U.S. Supreme Court to conclude that "equality under the law includes the right of gay couples to wed."

As at many metro newspapers, the DMN's editorial position was nuanced and evolving over the last decade. Its bold editorial Sunday is another step in the long march of the nation toward marriage equality. That journey includes Washington and Maine being the first two states to embrace same-sex marriage at the ballot box, as their voters did Nov. 6.

The Seattle Times came out strongly for Referendum 74 with its "I do" social media campaign after first supporting civil unions in 2000.

Arguably, that was easier to do in a blue state like Washington than a red state like Texas. But the Dallas Morning news went there in an eloquent editorial that explains its journey to this position. The editorial reflects the journey that so many individuals, including Washington state lawmakers, and institutions have taken and is as important as the last one and the next one.

Here's an excerpt:

We respect that some religious traditions see same-sex unions as an affront to their canons, scriptures and traditions. The First Amendment protects such places of worship from being compelled to conduct same-sex marriages. Additionally, the justices should take care to carve out strong and significant protections so that the institutions’ religious liberties, for instance their tax-exempt status, are not circumscribed.

In 2004, this newspaper opposed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. We have backed efforts to outlaw discrimination against employees based on sexual orientation. Now, we believe that the Supreme Court should conclude that equality under the law includes the right of gay couples to wed.
