Updated: On same-sex marriage: 11 newspaper edit boards in favor of Referendum 74, 1 against

Updated: Editorial boards of 11 Washington newspapers now have endorsed Referendum 74, which would affirm the law passed by the Washington Legislature earlier this year to allow same-sex marriage.

Only one newspaper, The Daily News in Longview has recommended its readers vote against the measure. Candidly, the editorial states that The Daily News' editorial board was divided on the matter. It also expresses comfort at the state of Washington's law currently:

We rest a little easier in our decision knowing that the legal rights of same-sex couples in Washington enjoy the protection of a 2007 law dealing with registered domestic partnerships that's so comprehensive that it's still commonly known as the "Everything But Marriage" law. We don't recommend that it be rolled back or weakened in any way.

Here are links to the newspaper editorials endorsing R-74:

The Seatttle Times
The News Tribune, in Tacoma
The Spokesman-Review, in Spokane
The Columbian, in Vancouver
The Walla Walla Union-Bulletin
The Olympian
The Herald of Everett
Tri-City Herald
The Wenatchee World

Since this post was first published Oct. 18, two more editorial boards have recommended voters approve Referendum 74:

The Yakima Herald-Republic
The Kitsap Sun
