Republican platform on same-sex marriage, abortion has problems
The Republicans adopted a 2012 party platform Tuesday at the party's national convention in Tampa, Fla. Many of the party's positions are opposed by The Seattle Times editorial board, including the party's position on same-sex marriage, immigration and abortion. Our board agrees with some positions. Here is a snapshot of some of the issues.
Marriage
GOP: Affirms marriage as "the union of a one man and one woman" and supports a constitutional amendment defining it that way.
Our editorial board: We support same-sex marriage.
Immigration
GOP: Oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants.
Our editorial board: We support the DREAM act to create a path for young people brought into the country illegally to obtain citizenship.
Abortion
GOP: The party proposes a constitutional amendment to ban abortion.
Our editorial board: We support a woman's right to choose.
Health care
GOP: Stop the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
Our editorial board: The Affordable Care Act was upheld in court. The country should focus on getting people covered and cutting health-care costs.
Education
GOP: Supports consumer choice of schools.
Our editorial board: We support charter schools.
