Komen for the Cure: Promises to keep
The ramifications continue for Susan G. Komen for the Cure from its three-day misstep in January when the organization said it would cut off funding to Planned Parenthood and then quickly said they would not.
President Liz Thompson has resigned as head of the nation's largest breast-cancer foundation, and Nancy Brinker, the founder, will switch from chief executive to a role in fundraising and strategic planning -- areas that need lots of attention.
These changes follow other resignations and changes since the January PR blunder, which precipitated a huge drop in contributions to the organization.
Whether these latest moves will bring supporters back remains to be seen. But there is no question that the work and mission of Komen is a worthy one, deserving of support. Komen says it has invested $1.3 billion for screenings, education and financial and psychological support for those fighting breast cancer in the 30 years since Brinker promised her dying sister she would end breast cancer.
That's a promise that should be kept. Forgive Komen and give again.
