Seattle City Council will send a $290 million bond measure to voters to replace the waterfront seawall. The measure will be on the Nov. 6 ballot.

The owner of a $360,000 home would pay $59 per year for 30 years. City officials say the seawall, built almost 100 years ago, has been damaged by age and marine borers, also known as gribbles. City officials are worried the wall could collapse in an earthquake.

Keep in mind that in the Aug. 7 primary election Seattle voters will also be asked to approve a $123 million seven-year levy for libraries, and King County voters will be asked to approve a $210 million nine-year levy to replace the Youth Services Center, which includes the juvenile court and detention center. We support replacing the Youth Services Center, which will cost the owner of a $350,000 home $25 a year. (We have not yet taken a position on the Seattle library levy, which would cost the owner of a $361,000 home $52 a year.)
