Check out Seattle Times front page, July 4, 1913
My column for the July 4 paper is about Independence Day a century ago, when attitudes were different about fireworks, political radicals and the flag. In the printed paper the column is illustrated with a drawing of Uncle Sam. I also found the July 4, 1913, front page fascinating. The "insult" to Old Glory happened when an American waved the U.S. flag at a Canadian Army parade in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and some specators (not the soldiers!) ripped the flag from his hands and threw it in the street. That this was a page one headline is really quite amazing.
