Kiewit suspensions the right move

When Kiewit employees working in an administrative office of the Highway 520 floating-bridge project were caught on a KOMO 4 hidden camera drinking beer in the office, this newspaper said there should be more discipline applied than just sending workers to counseling sessions.

Kiewit said Thursday it was suspending without pay five employees -- two senior project managers, a senior vice president and two employees of Kiewit's partner Manson Construction Co. Kiewit said they would lose pay because they allowed the drinking to happen.

Lower ranking employees who had the alcohol will receive written counseling, 55 more employees will attend training sessions and a reminder of the company's no-alcohol rule will be sent to all workers.

The action by Kiewit shows a commitment to build the Highway 520 bridge safely and well. It's what the public should expect and what it should get.
