Councilwoman Jan Drago itching to run for mayor - and will

Posted by Joni Balter

Seattle City Councilmember Jan Drago is leaving the council at the end of the year and seems very eager to challenge Mayor Greg Nickels for the city's top job.
Political insiders are dissecting a rather suspect poll for Drago that says tells responders several positive things about Drago and then asks how voters feel about her versus the mayor. According to poll results, Drago beats the mayor by 21 points - after polling experts says things like Drago would be first woman mayor in decades and she was a key player in revitalizing downtown Seattle.
Drago is expected to announce her candidacy between now and Monday. Many who know her are underwhelmed by her candidacy.
For one thing, she agrees with the mayor on a lot of policy so the campaign will have to be somewhat about personality and style..

No matter. Nickels will have to earn his third term. Nickels dodged the biggest challenge when former Seattle City Councilmember Peter Streinbrueck opted not to run.
Other action in the mayor's race may involve one challenger, James Donaldson, changing plans if his consultant quits his campaign to work for Drago. That's the word on the street.
It's going to be a mayor's race after all.
If Drago gets in, and I suspect she will, she has a good chance of making it through the primary. But if I had to guess now, I would says Nickels would beat her handily in November.
