Missing girl found at shopping center

Bellevue police Tuesday found a 13-year-old girl who had run away from her parents while they were on vacation in the city.

A man saw Savannah Burns' face on the news Monday night and then recognized her as she walked through Southcenter mall in Tukwila on Tuesday afternoon. He called Bellevue police, and they found Burns walking out of a store, said department spokesman Greg Grannis.

Burns, of Rhode Island, had last been seen leaving the Bellevue Hilton on Saturday night. She had left her ID and money behind, police said.

Burns was found in good condition, but did not tell detectives why she ran away or where she had been, Grannis said.

Plackett running for post of mayor

Holly Plackett has announced her candidacy for mayor of Redmond.

Plackett, 58, served on the Redmond City Council from 2000 to 2003. Prior to that, she served five years on the Redmond Planning Commission. Plackett is an assistant vice president at US Bank and for the past two years has served on the King County Transit Advisory Committee.

With Mayor Rosemarie Ives' plan to step down after her term ends this year, November's election marks the first time in 16 years that the job will be open. Ives has served since 1992.

Early-morning fire destroys home

A Bellevue home was destroyed by fire Tuesday, and there was extensive damage to the contents, which included an art collection, the Bellevue Fire Department reported.

The blaze was reported about 5:30 a.m. in the 5700 block of 111th Avenue Southeast, east of Interstate 405 in the Pleasure Point area near Lake Washington.

An older couple was in the home when the blaze was reported, said Lt. Eric Keenan, Bellevue Fire Department community-liaison officer. They escaped, but were taken to Overlake Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Firefighters responded after receiving a 911 call and also a notification of the fire from an alarm company, Keenan said. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, he said, but it may have been related to candles used at a party the previous night.

Public records indicate the home was owned by a couple in their 70s and was built in 1974, with an assessed value of about $450,000.

Newcastle

Fire damages exterior of home

A fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon at a single-family house in the 12800 block of Southeast 80th Way near Lake Boren in Newcastle caused about $25,000 in damage to the exterior siding and possible smoke damage to the house's interior.

No one was home at the time of the fire, which occurred around 4 p.m. and took Bellevue firefighters about 20 minutes to contain. The fire appeared to have started in an outside mechanical room attached to the house that serves a hot tub, or around the fireplace area, and moved into the attic of the house, said Bellevue Fire Dept. Lt. Eric Keenan.

The fire is still under investigation, he said.
