WSU's Two-Minute Drill
Notes and quotes from Arizona at Washington State
Player of the game
Arizona freshman cornerback Shaquille Richardson had two interceptions off deflections, broke up three passes and saved a touchdown on an 83-yard pass play by Washington State late in the game.
Play of the game
Washington State punter Reid Forrest fumbled a snap on the Cougars' first series of the third quarter, allowing Arizona to take control at the Cougars' 7-yard line. When the Wildcats scored on the next play, it gave them a 21-0 lead and WSU could never get the deficit inside double digits.
The Cougars surprised Arizona with an onside kick recovery to open the game and moved for a first down inside Wildcats territory. But Jeff Tuel's high pass deflected off Daniel Blackledge's hands and turned into an interception by Richardson, blunting WSU's momentum. Arizona scored two series later for a lead it never relinquished.
Arizona held the Cougars to only 297 yards total offense, 83 of it on a fourth-quarter pass play from Tuel to Marquess Wilson.
WSU's running game, which had been improving the past two weeks, took a step back. The Cougars' leading rusher was Tuel, who made a couple of nifty scrambles for first downs, including one of 19 yards. But coach Paul Wulff said the Cougars don't want to make a habit of planned runs by their sophomore quarterback, who now has thrown for 200 yards or more in seven consecutive games in 2010. "We need to keep him upright," Wulff said. "For us to continue to grow, we need him in the game."
He said it
"We're competing with these teams now. A year ago, we didn't compete with any team." — WSU WR Gino Simone.
Arizona — QB Nick Foles (sprained knee), probably out two to three weeks.
WSU — OT David Gonzales (broken arm), out for the season; CB Damante Horton (knee), status undetermined; P Reid Forrest (shoulder), status undetermined.
