Take your pick of Notre Dame offensive stars:

Quarterback Jimmy Clausen connected on 22 of 27 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns.

Receiver Golden Tate caught four passes for 80 yards and carried the ball four times for 61 yards, scoring on a pass and run in the first half.

Robert Hughes, Notre Dame's bruising running back, carried 24 times for 131 yards, with one touchdown.

Play of the game

The Cougars cut Notre Dame's lead to 23-7 late in the first half, but the Irish stretched it back out on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Clausen to Tate on the last play of the half. Tate went up with three WSU defenders and another Notre Dame receiver in the end zone and came down with the ball, giving the Irish a 30-7 lead at the break.

Cougars receiver Jared Karstetter caught two passes against the Irish. Both were for touchdowns. Dwight Tardy gained 72 yards on just eight carries and averaged 25.3 yards on three kickoff returns. Linebacker Jason Stripling led the Cougars with a career-high 13 tackles. Linebacker Andy Mattingly made seven tackles, forced one fumble and recovered another. Reid Forrest punted eight times, for an average of 41.8 yards.

WSU highlight

The Cougars, who had just two first downs on their first five drives, took the ball 69 yards in seven plays late in the first half for their first touchdown. Washington State quarterback Jeff Tuel connected with Karstetter on an 11-yard pass for the score.

The Cougars came into the game having been outscored 112-3 in the first quarter in their first seven games. Against Notre Dame, the Cougars stopped the Irish on its first drive deep into WSU territory, forcing a field goal. But the WSU offense didn't make a first down until Tuel went 14 yards on a run on the last play of the first quarter. By then, the Cougars trailed 9-0, making the first-quarter tally 121-3 in eight games this season.
